This is a beautiful book, half-poetry and half-prose, about remembering, longing, and celebrating freedom. The author is one of the Pedro Pan children sent by loving parents to the U.S. in order to escape the tyranny of Casto's regime. "They can take things from us. But not my gift. My imagination." The first page of this beautiful work of remembrance pulled me right inside the book and closed the cover behind me. Each poem and story wrapped me in the love Amarilys holds for her birthplace. The challenges Peter Pan children had to endure at such a young age gave them an unfathomable strength to survive the obstacles of two cultures and two languages. I know only two others; one was a classmate and dear friend in Clearwater, Florida, and the other became a U.S. senator. They are in good company with Amarilys Gacio Rassler.
The artwork and photos also provide a peek inside her heart. Even the cover art looks like her, with her beautiful, bright smile!
Cuban-American Dancing on the Hyphen is a beautifully stitched word-quilt of Amarilys Bacio Rassler’s memories of the home of her childhood, sensitively integrated with her new life in the United States.
Through her inspirational words, I have some sense of the imprisonment of those caught behind the Communist curtain of Cuba. I learned of children whisked out on the wings of Operation Peter Pan, of the parents left behind and what it means to try to balance two cultures in one life.
She graphically portrays emotions that kaleidoscope from the raw pain of separation from her parents, and home to the memories of her matriculation into American culture. Her beautifully crafted folk-stories are poignantly illuminated through poetic verses reflective of the tropical rhythms of her Cuban roots. Thank you Amaryllis for opening my eyes, expanding my mind, entertaining my emotions and touching my heart.

Wow...just...Wow. I cried. I laughed. I remembered things forgotten by the passing of time.
It is as if Amarilys (Marggie with 2 gs) has been given the gift to experience the feelings, thoughts and memories of all of the Cubans who left the island and now live in exile... and condensed them into this 103 page book... One of the things that amazed me was that although she was only 10 years old when she left the island as part of the 1960-1962 Peter Pan exodus of children, she has retained so much of the 'sabor' (flavor) of what it is to be Cuban.
I recommend reading this book to every single Cuban living away from our island's shores - believe me, the words in this book will resonate within your heart - and to everyone else, non-Cubans who have no idea of what it is to be an exile.
The drawings by Tony Mendoza, a Cuban-American who was actually born in NY State, reflect the same feeling as do Marggie's words...
I too was called a 'gusana' (worm, contemptuous epithet used by the communists to address any Cuban who was leaving the island) when I went to the Cuban State Dept to turn in my Cuban passport and get a receipt so I could go to the American Embassy and get my American passport (I was born with dual citizenship, as my mother was American). I could not claim the latter until I renounced the first....How can you renounce the place of your birth?....
The threads that bind us to that beautiful island are woven tightly into the souls of all her children....and this book is proof.....Marggie with 2 gs...Gracias.
An amazing book that transported me back to my childhood. Amarilys Rassler has an amazing gift! Thank you Amarilys, for unearthing so many buried memories, that had been carefully tucked away in this Cuban-American girl's heart.
Amarilys tells the tale of thousands of Cubans who chose the hard road to leave their beloved island of Cuba behind for the promise of America. Children separated from their parents, memories of childhood, the deep respect and love of parents and country are all captured in Amarilys' wonderfully direct and sympathetic tone, both in prose and in poetry. This is what it means to be a Cuban-American, living a life between two cultures and making the best of it.
I read Cuban-American Dancing on the Hyphen because of my interest in Operation Pedro Pan. Through Ms. Rassler vivid and compelling stories and poetry, I was transported across the waters to Cuba to when she was a little girl of ten and then back again as an adult in the United States. This touching book was inspirational and moved me deeply.
